Emergency Medical Services, A.S.

The Emergency Medical Services A.S. program prepares students for promotions and advancement within the EMS industry. Students who are a state of Florida certified as EMT and Paramedic, and graduated from a Florida accredited EMS Training Program, have already fulfilled the core requirements and can earn an A.S. degree in as little as one or two semesters. With an A.S. degree in Emergency Medical Services, it is possible to move beyond providing care in the field and seek a position in management with a public safety agency or healthcare provider.

The Santa Fe College EMS Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Profession (CoAEMSP).

Licensure and Certification
Upon completion of this program, students can earn professional certifications and occupational licenses, including those concerning out-of-state reciprocity.

Admission Requirements
The Emergency Medical Services A.S. Degree is a limited-access degree program. Successful applicants for this limited access program will have completed the following prerequisite courses and also meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of the following prerequisite courses with a grade of “C” or higher
    • MAT1033 or MAT1034 required if completing MAC1105 College Algebra
      ​MAT1034 or MGF1100 required if completing MGF1106 Topics in Math
  • Completion of the following professional core with a grade of “C” or higher
    • EMS1119 EMT Basic
    • EMS1119L EMT Basic
    • EMS1411 Clinical/Hospital
    • EMS1421 EMT Basic Clinical
    • EMS2464 Clinical Experience 1
    • EMS2465 Clinical Experience 2
    • EMS2620 Phase 1 Paramedic

  • Completion of EMS1059 First Responder or equivalent with a grade of “C” or higher

Program Goals and Outcomes
The EMS Program’s goal is to prepare Paramedics who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession.

This program prepares students to provide pre-hospital emergency medical services. Knowledge, skills, and abilities developed in this program also prepare graduates for positions in EMS management or education.

Program Length, Format and Curriculum
This program is a planned sequence of instruction consisting of 74 credit hours.

  • 19 credit hours - General Education Courses
  • 12 credit hours - Emergency Medical Technician - These courses meet the requirements of the current US DOT National EMS Educations Standards. In addition, courses include State of Florida specific information. EMT students will learn basic life support patient care procedures.
  • 42 credit hours - Paramedic - These courses meet the requirements of the most current US DOT National EMS Education Standards. In addition, courses include State of Florida specific information. Paramedic students will learn advanced life support patient care procedures, which builds upon the knowledge of EMT.

Note: The Emergency Vehicle Operator’s Course (EMS 1335) is not a requirement to graduate from the EMT certificate program, the paramedic certificate program, or the Emergency Medical Services Associate in Science program. However, EMS 1335 is a requirement for employment as an emergency medical technician for most fire rescue and ambulance agencies in Florida. This course is offered at the Kirkpatrick Center. 

Students who have completed EMT and paramedic coursework from a Joint Review Committee (JRC) accredited paramedic program, and a CoAEMSP accredited program, and who have current certification may receive credit for the professional core requirements.

Students must achieve a grade of C or higher in all courses leading to the Associate in Science degree in Emergency Medical Services.

Additional information for students wishing to transfer to the University of Florida: All applicants must have completed two sequential courses of foreign languages in secondary school or between 8 and 10 semester hours at the post-secondary level or document an equivalent level of proficiency.
