Credit Hours: 4.0
Prerequisite(s): None
Corequisite(s): None
This course is designed as an introduction to the saltwater biological systems that cover seventy percent of planet Earth. The physical and chemical factors that affect marine organisms are examined and the resulting biological and ecological interrelationships are emphasized. An organismal survey of marine microbes, plants and animals gives students an appreciation for biological organization and evolution in the context of the history of marine science and present-day research techniques. The lab component of the course gives students direct experience with organisms and systems studied. Experimental design and use of the scientific method are emphasized. This lecture and lab course is designed to meet 4 credit hours of general education credit in the biological sciences. The general education learning outcome targeted in this course is Scientific Reasoning.
