LBS 4154  - Workers and Diversity

Credit Hours: 3.0
Prerequisite(s): GEB3213 with C and MAN4301 with C
Corequisite(s): None
This course will explore the legal, social and economic aspects of diversity in the modern workplace. The context of diversity will be analyzed from the standpoint of how our legal system has evolved to create, embrace, and challenge the social quo of the non-majority workforce, through U.S. Supreme Court decisions and through legislation such as the Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, and the Family Medical Leave Act, among others. This course will assess the historical position of women and minorities in the labor force; the social phenomena that contribute to discriminatory practices and the policies that attempt to address these issues are also studied. The course will also assess the emergence of diversity as not just a legal requirement, but a goal, as our society becomes more diverse, and businesses seek to broaden their appeal to the changing dynamics of American society and culture.
