LIT 1000  - Literature Appreciation

In this course, students will be assigned readings representative of a broad range of literary genres and cultures. These readings will cover a variety of literary movements and historical eras. The readings will include selections from the Western canon. Written analysis of literary works may be required. Students will be provided with opportunities to practice critical interpretation.

Literature Appreciation is an introduction to literature as an art form, emphasizing the historical, cultural, and aesthetic elements of written art. Students will learn to identify and interpret formal and genre-related elements in texts; they will learn the structures and conventions of different literary genres; and they will recognize the power of language as an art form. This course fulfills a state core requirement within the Humanities; it also fulfills the Humanities A category of the Santa Fe General Education graduation requirement. The course satisfies the 1A writing-intensive tier in which students use writing to explore and develop their mastery and understanding of course content.
