The Health Information Technology Associate in Science Degree is a CAHIIM accredited 70-credit hour program.
Health information (HIM) professionals, an allied health and STEM profession, lead efforts to ensure the availability, accuracy, integrity, and security of all data related to patient healthcare encounters result in better clinical and business decisions to enhance healthcare quality.
HI professionals play a critical role in gathering, analyzing, and protecting the data that doctors, nurses and other health care providers rely on to deliver quality health care. They are experts in managing, securing, and ensuring the accuracy and the integrity of the patient health information and health records, administering information systems, coding, validating, and billing the diagnosis and procedures codes for health care services provided to patients.
HI professionals are the bridge between clinical, business, and technology needs within a healthcare organization. HI professionals work in a multitude of settings throughout the healthcare industry including hospitals, physician offices and clinics, long-term care facilities, insurance companies, government agencies and home health care providers. Students who successfully graduate with an AS degree in Health Information Technology are prepared and eligible to obtain their AHIMA RHIT national certification to include a coding certification and others, based on experience. Upon successful completion of STA 2023 and at time of graduation, students are eligible to receive their revenue cycle management certification, data management analytics certification and their AS degree in Health Information Technology.
Student is to be familiar with Microsoft Applications as they will be used throughout the program. If not comfortable or need a refresher, please take CGS 1101 prior to taking HIM 1000 .
The program requires satisfactory test grades in the College Placement Test (PERT) in reading and writing prior to beginning the program.
If STA 2023 is taken, student is eligible to receive the Data Management Analytics (DMA) Certificate upon graduation. Students will also receive their RCM medical coder biller certificate.
Professional practice experience(s) requirements are 30 - 40 hours face to face time during business hours within an assigned healthcare organization. All required data elements must be current and present. Various costs may be incurred based on where the student is placed. Please plan accordingly. If working, you will need to coordinate with employer and/or use PTO (Paid Time Off) time.
A grade of C or better is required for all courses.
